Law Enforcement Appreciation Day
Douglas County, Kansas
WHEREAS, National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (L.E.A.D.) is an event sponsored by Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc. (C.O.P.S.) and other partnering organizations in support of law enforcement officers nationwide; and
WHEREAS, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, on average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty in the United States every 60 hours; and
WHEREAS, the Officer Down Memorial Page, Inc. reports in the United States in 2015 there have been 124 law enforcement fatalities as of December 29; and
WHEREAS, the Lawrence Police Department, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Baldwin City Police Department, Eudora Police Department, Kansas University Public Safety Office and Kansas Highway Patrol provide a tremendous public service to the community; and
WHEREAS, these men and women risk their lives on a daily basis protecting our community; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of Douglas County are invited to participate in Law Enforcement Appreciation Day and show their support for Law enforcement in the community by thanking an officer, wearing blue, shining a blue light from their home, placing a blue ribbon outside their home and/or business or sending a card of support.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF DOUGLAS COUNTY, KANSAS, do hereby proclaim January 9, 2016 as “Law Enforcement Appreciation Day” in Douglas County and call upon all citizens, government agencies, public and private institutions, businesses and schools to take a moment to show their appreciation for the men and women that protect and serve Douglas County.
