The Treasurer's Office provides services related to Motor Vehicles and Taxes for Douglas County, Kansas.
Starting August 16th, for the State of Kansas to be in compliance with federal regulations, the treasurer’s office will no longer be able to register a vehicle without a title. In the past, we have issued a temporary courtesy registration for those who moved to Kansas from another state without a title. NMVTIS (National Motor Vehicle Title Information System), was established under the Anti Car Theft Act of 1992 and was reauthorized under the Anti Car Theft Improvements Act of 1996. It is a tool designed to assist state vehicle title agencies, vehicle title investigators, and law enforcement in deterring and preventing vehicle related crimes. It is intended to protect consumers from fraud and unsafe vehicles.
For those who are moving to Douglas County and the vehicle was previously registered in another state, a title will be required to register. We understand that some states are electronic titles, in those situations a title will need to be requested to be printed and mailed from your previous state. If the lienholder has the physical title, they can mail the title to the Treasurer office at P.O. BOX 884 Lawrence, KS 66044
The Treasurer’s Office's downtown and South Lawrence location are open to walk-in public traffic. Visit No Wait Inside to get in line, please wait in your vehicle until you receive a text that a clerk is ready.
