Douglas County Sustainability Team

Our employee-led Sustainability Team for Douglas County.

Our Douglas County Sustainability Team is a team of County employees with representation from all departments - from the Appraiser's office to Youth Services.

Our employee team meets monthly to design programs and outreach opportunities to educate our employees about sustainability.  We do this by:

  • Hosting lunch 'n learn sessions - Employees bring their lunch and learn about a sustainability topic.  Recent topics have included energy efficiency, composting, and solar energy.

  • Advancing internal policies - Last year, we created a Countywide policy that requires departments to buy paper that has at least 30% recycled content, and to purchase remanufactured toner cartridges for all county printers and copiers.

  • Supporting County events - Each year, County employees host a United Way picnic fundraiser.  The Sustainability Team works closely with local farmers and restaurants to procure donations of healthy, Douglas County-grown foods for the event.

  • Hosting the annual Green Games - Each year, the Sustainability Team hosts the Green Games competition between individual employees and departments.  Individuals and departments compete in weekly contests themed around sustainability priorities (i.e. local food, recycling, green purchasing, and sustainable transportation).  This is a fun way to engage County employees in helping the County reach our sustainability goals!
