County Commission support Read Across Lawrence Event

WHEREAS, Read Across Lawrence is an annual, community-wide reading event that encourages everyone in Lawrence to read and discuss the same book. Now in its 16th year, it will commence on February 10th and close on March 17th; and

WHEREAS, in 2018, Read Across Lawrence for the first time ever will feature a single book, Wonder by RJ Palacio. The themes of kindness, friendship, and acceptance featured in Wonder are messages that will resonate with children, teens and adults in our community; and

WHEREAS, together with the University of Kansas Libraries, Lawrence Public Schools, and other community partners, Lawrence Public Library will host book discussions and activities for all ages to explore Wonder’s important message to always “Choose Kind”; and

WHEREAS, Read Across Lawrence will culminate with a keynote presentation by global motivational speaker, anti-bullying activist, social media personality, and author Lizzie Velasquez. This family-friendly capstone event is scheduled for Sunday, March 11 at 3:30 pm at the Lied Center of Kansas; and

WHEREAS, Lawrence Public Library will encourage everyone in the community to keep track of their acts of kindness throughout the Read Across Lawrence month so that by the conclusion of the program, Lawrence will be an official “Certified-Kind Community.”

NOW, THEREFORE, the Board of County Commissioners of Douglas County, Kansas,
recognizes the Lawrence Public Library’s 2018 Read Across Lawrence program and urges all citizens to choose kindness and challenges it’s residents to spread random acts of kindness throughout Douglas County.
