About the Douglas County Food Policy Council
The purpose of the Council is:
- To advise elected officials on food-system* related policy issues and opportunities.
- To provide a community forum for local food system* development.
Participation by diverse voices from all parts of the local food system is essential to the mission and work of the Council. In particular, the Council seeks to recruit members based on two essential considerations:
- Ensuring balance across the county's urban and rural communities, with attention to the important voices of multiple agricultural producers from various production practices.
- Advancing equitable representation, where all residents can participate fully, regardless of socioeconomic status, geography, race, ethnicity, gender, or immigration status.
Members of the Council are appointed by both the Douglas County and City of Lawrence Commissioners to ensure that all sectors of the food system are represented.
