Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez today announced that a jury returned a guilty verdict on one count of  rape against Ray C. Atkins, 22, of Lawrence.

Charges stemmed from an incident involving a then 17-year-old Wichita resident who was staying at a residence located in the 2900 block of Belle Haven Drive on or about July 19, 2019.

“Justice prevailed for this young woman who displayed incredible strength to tell her story in court,” District Attorney Suzanne Valdez said. “Sexual assault cases are notoriously difficult to prosecute but I am so proud of our team of attorneys for their diligence and dedication.”

The State was represented by Senior Assistant District Attorney Seth Brackman. The case was investigated by the Lawrence Police Department, the Wichita Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Sentencing was set by Judge James Fleetwood for 9 a.m. on September 19, 2022 at the Douglas County Judicial and Law Enforcement Center.

Atkins faces between 147 to 653 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections.
